It's finally settled.
Sadly, it looks like the Rose Twiggy is officially out of my hands now, snapped up by someone with far better decision-making skills than me. So I took most of your advice, which was a big "NO" on the Metallic Pewter and a general "Meh" on the Black, and went for a more interesting, less fleeting color. Namely, Sky Blue:
It's not Rose, but it'll do.
As an aside, I found a great Balenciaga authentication service by the lady who wrote guide for buying authentic Balenciaga bags. For $5 you can get up to three auctions evaluated, or one non-auction bag.

i have been looking for a site that sells auth Balenciaga bags but it's like finding style on Britney Spears, non-existent.

This one I actually got off a reputable seller on ebay, with a good history of selling authentic Balenciaga and Vuitton. Discontinued colors are really hard to find, and about 85% of the bags I sent to be authenticated were actually fake, despite the $1000+ price tags! Sky Blue was Pre-Spring 2005, so it wasn't as hard as finding, say, Seafoam. I'm taking my own advice and paid with credit card in case something goes wrong, and will get the actual bag authenticated again once I receive it... you can never be too careful.
So far the only sites authorized to sell Balenciaga Bags are Aloha Rag and Brown's Fashion (you get that VAT back, but still have to pay customs, but it works about a bit in your favor), and I believe that they are only allowed to take email and phone inquiries. All other sites, like PureModa.com, sell fakes but represent them as authentic. I'm not quite sure how they get away with that.
You can always call Barneys NYC or the Balenciaga Boutique in NYC, sometimes they do have bags in stock. For discontinued colors... I suppose you have to be diligent and watch ebay closely, and authenticate everything before bidding.
